The Problem with Trail Mix

To get myself through the week, I bought some Passover-friendly snacks for work like fresh fruit, carrot sticks and pre-made salads (rabbit food), as well a big bag of TJ’s trail mix (squirrel food). It’s a good trail mix – lots of yummy things like cashews, dried cherries, dried cranberries – but it suffers from the same problem as any other trail mix: not all ingredients are created equal. Clearly the dried pineapple chunks are the gems in the bag. I really tried to consume all of the components of the trail mix at an equal rate, but somehow I have half a bag left and no more pineapples. And now I seem to have lost interest in the trail mix (perhaps especially so now that Passover is finished and I can consume my normal office snacks of cereal and granola bars again).

Why not just purchase a bag of dried pineapple chunks instead, you ask? Great idea. TJ’s used to stock such a wonderful thing, but it hasn’t graced their shelves for many months now. It seems to have gone the way of the turkey burgers (which came and went, and came and went, and came… and now seem to have disappeared again).

(I lead a very exciting life, don’t I?)

  1. I just wanted to say that you are not the only Passover victim,
me and my wife took a vacation and saw a lot of great restaurants that make their own incredible bred ( it looks like it ), but we couldn’t taste it :-(
so… no more vacations on Passover

  2. I think we would share trail mix quite well, as I despise the pineapple chunks and would only eat all of the other tasty treats.

  3. Yes, the turkey burgers have gone to turkey burger heaven (again). In my store, however, they’ve been replaced with some yummy Chile Lime Chicken Burgers in the same spot where the turkey burgers once lay!

  4. Yes, the Chile Lime burgers are pretty good. And we still have 3 boxes of turkey burgers stockpiled in our freezer for when we get cravings. :)

  5. Hi! This is Katie Light. I know that we haven’t been in touch in a really, really long time. So, this was interesting, what happened yesterday. . . I was walking home on Mass Ave. (I live in Cambridge currently and commute daily to Brandeis University in Waltham) and I ran into Maia Taussig! We chatted for several minutes, exchanged phone numbers, I met her boyfriend, and then continued to lug my full Trader Joe’s canvas grocery bags around the corner to my apartment. Anyway, meeting Maia was a catalyst for my spending a good deal of time, spilling over into the early morning hours, searching for people from “back then” and “back there”. Thank you so much for having a domain name and being so easy to find! I spent a long time reading through your blog. Mazal tov on your marriage – that is so exciting!! And, congratulations on your job and on Vista, etc. Your travels sound fascinating! I have been looking at your slide shows. I am in class right now, and slide shows are a perfect, unassuming passtime! Anyway, I just wanted to say hi. I am so glad to have located you and I hope that you are having sunny weather today in Seattle.
