Today was the 10-year anniversary of Windows 95. I wouldn’t have known, if not for the out of office message from someone on my team this afternoon, who was attending a 10-year anniversary celebration. His OOF message also had a link to a great little tidbit from Raymond Chen describing his experience at the launch party 10 years ago.
And one of the comments on Raymond’s blog post was pretty amazing too:
As I have for the last 5 or 6 years, I’m having a “birthday party” for Windows95 today. For real. I know that sounds totally nuts (and it probably is to some degree), but Windows95 took us all out of the dark ages and into the new frontier. Me and my co-coders will get some cake and soda and play “Start Me Up” from a Win95 CD… Nerds at their worst… I mean best.
I hope that the release of Vista meets with some excitement as well. :)

My roommate and I were up late playing Karaoke Revolution two nights ago, and I’m still feeling the effects — my throat is scratchy, and I’m sleeepy. I think I need to limit myself to only playing on weekends, and perhaps only for a certain amount of time per day (in order to protect the precious vocal cords :)).

Robert Ingebretsen has joined the ranks of the Avalon team bloggers! Robby is a Program Manager on the Component Model team, and his specialties include resources, styling, templates, and other aspects related to enabling designers and developers to work together to create visually compelling applications (and he also knows a good deal about controls). He has some interesting content up there already, and I look forward to seeing lots more from him in the future. Stop by and say hello!

I never feel quite right posting much personal information here these days, especially as this seems to have morphed into more of a work-related blog than a personal one. But maybe we’ll pretend that this news item is work-related, since it involves two Microsoft employees: KW and I are getting married. It’s pretty crazy stuff… except that, well, it’s not actually that crazy at all.
We’re easing our way into the wedding planning process. We expect that it won’t be too too stressful, since we’re both pretty good at making decisions and just don’t want to be stupid about things. So far, people have been impressed at our ability to execute on this stuff, so I hope it continues that way. :)
We probably won’t set up a silly wedding website at a silly domain like LaurenAndKennyAreGettingMarried.com. I think Kenny and I own enough domains between the two of us (I have three, he has two :)). I may, however, dedicate part of this site to a bit of practical/logistical wedding info if necessary. I’ll try not to be too obnoxious about it.

A couple of interesting mods to Hybrid vehicles: improve the gas mileage of your Toyota Prius using solar panels, or by storing an extra battery in the trunk.
It seems like these designs may still need a bit of work, but perhaps they’ll be more crystallized a few years down the road when I’m ready to trade in my Civic Hybrid. And if not, the convertible Beetle, running on biodiesel, sounds attractive as well. :)

I’m going to the OC for the weekend to chill with friends from high school — only one of whom actually lives there anymore. But a few of them will be in town to visit their parents, since this is what is known as “summer vacation” to those who get some notion of a time they can just leave and aren’t leaving responsibilities behind them when they do. :) And even though my family isn’t in Irvine anymore, I’m just trekking down there to hang with the girls.
It should be a blast — we haven’t had a “girls’ night” like this since Spring Break during my senior year at Cal.
And after that, I’ll be in Seattle for a whole two weeks, before Labor Day in DC and then PDC madness in LA. Awesome.

After 5 months of having this new website, I finally got around to re-posting the Greece photos.
That was an awesome vacation (and it was almost a year ago!) I’ll need to hold out until December for the next one. ;)

One month (plus one day) left until PDC 2005, and counting!
We’re all in the full swing of PDC prep mode over here in Avalon WPF land, and it’s fun. September will be an exciting time.
