Seattle.
There was a crazy hailstorm in Redmond this evening; it almost made me apprehensive about crossing the bridge and making my way back home. It was cool though. And even though we’ve had no snow all winter, supposedly Crystal is opening this weekend.
It’s been a strange winter here: we’ve had alternating weeks of gorgeous sunshine and general ickiness, but it’s never been consistently icky enough for us to actually get snow in the mountains. And now we’re even looking at a summer of drought conditions that has the Eastern Washington farming communities (as well as the Western Washington-based consumers of farm products) rather concerned.
And while I’m complaining about random natural conditions in Seattle, I also wish we had a few beaches like this one:
(I actually really do love it here, and the summers are amazing; but even after a year and a half there are still some things to which I haven’t fully adjusted. Fortunately I do have excuses to make frequent trips to California and Miami.)

I’ve been playing with Gallery v1.4.4 a bit over the past few days (and I’ve started uploading photos — it’s not really ready for prime time yet, but you can check the early incarnation out here). This version has some really cool features that didn’t exist in the old one I was using, including RSS support and integration with the Windows XP Web Publishing Wizard (this latter feature is uber sexy).
I’m going to need to write myself a pretty theme that will integrate Gallery and WordPress. I hope to get started on that soon; I spent more time this weekend helping Kenny set up a website for his family than tinkering with this one. But his is starting to look pretty good…
And no, Brian, I promise I didn’t forget you, I’ve just been building this up again very very slowly after losing my old site. :( There are definitely other links I still need to add over there on the right, but more importantly, people I want to keep in much better touch with than I have.

From the depths of the Google archive, one of my favorite posts from the old site:
Another Tuesday Night
September 4, 2002, 3:14am
Mmmmmmmm….. Tuesday night is officially drunk night in Berkeley. Quotable quote:
Sybil: You guys have to understand the dynamics of a thumb.
Lauren: Dude, that is so fucking going on the fucking internet.
Ohmigod, you have no idea how hard it is to type this. But I’ve had four glasses of water, so I’m determined not to have a hangover in the morning. Cause I have a 9:00 class and that would be really inconvenient. Heh.
My roommates kick so much ass. They are the best. So beautiful and just generally better than anyone.
It’s my dad’s birthday and I have to remember to call him. I figure if I post it on the internet I can’t forget.
Heh, quoting myself feels kind of funny. Is this meta-blogging?

Heh, apparently my stepbrother Michael has a blog. Who knew?
And he’s crazy, but we all knew that.

Hey kids, welcome to the new blog. Yes, it’s just the WordPress boilerplate for now, but I figured I’d rather have something functional right away, and I’ll make it pretty later (maybe this weekend?)
In case you’re wondering, the old site is toast, due to a hard drive crash (apparently I was supposed to make my own backups?) I have since switched my web hosting provider. I was able to recover my files, but the database is kaput; thanks to Google’s massive cache, I think I have recovered almost all of the old posts, but I haven’t decided what to do with them yet. Some of them may surface here at some point.
